We sat down with Katrina from Byron Bay Skincare to discover her skin care non-negotiables and how as a business they weave sustainable practices into all they do.
Why did you start Byron Bay skincare, tell us a little about your story and journey?
Cawarra Cosmetics (our company) was started by my parents thirty-five years ago. We specialise in manufacturing natural and certified organic skincare. Our factory and our brands are based in Byron Bay. My brother saw an opportunity to create a 100% natural skincare for youth, who are more and more conscious about the brands they use, what they are made from and the causes they support. Byron Bay Skincare was started to offer this customer luxurious skincare products, and inspire our generation to adopt socially and environmentally responsible lifestyles.
Tell us about your daily skincare routine do you have any rituals or non -negotiable’s when it comes to caring for you skin?
I don’t use anything that is not 100% natural. Check your labels. Unfortunately, many “natural” products in market are allowed to include synthetic ingredients by the businesses that they are certified by. Some companies set their own certification standards. I also make sure that all my skincare products are not tested on animals and the products are certified cruelty free.
Why is it important to opt for more natural skincare ingredients?
Skin is our body’s largest organic and protective barrier. We need to be aware of what we are exposing it to. If you put synthetic ingredients on your skin, they get into your body. Some synthetic ingredients can also irritate. Using natural skin care products will help your skin feel and look healthier than ever before.
What is self-love to you and how do you practice this in your life?
Balance between business and family. I try not to work evenings or on weekends. A good night’s sleep. Choosing all natural food and products when possible. Having fun.
Tell us about your partnership with Seed for Change and why you choose this organisation?
Deforestation is the leading cause of climate change. If we want to protect the future of our planet, and our own health, tree planting has to be part of the plan. Seed The Change are dedicated to planting trees with rural communities, restoring their environments, growing more food and building a sustainable future. By planting one tree with every product sold online with Seed The Change, and ensuring all our products are produced responsibly, we allow each and every customer to make a difference.
Why is the future of our planet important to you – how do you see businesses contributing to its protection?
As an individual, I’m conscious of my environmental impact. As a business owner, I’m conscious of our businesses environmental impact. I believe all businesses should have corporate social responsibility and sustainable practices integrated into their business plans and do what they can now to make a change.
Any advice to us on how to winter proof our skin for the cooler months ahead?
Don’t skip your routine just because it’s cold. Cleanse morning and night with our Byron Bay Skincare Gel Cleanser. Moisturise with our Hydrating Lotion. And give your body a boost with our Body Soufflé – a replenishing mix of Macadamia and Chia Seed Oil. A light a fluffy moisturiser that leaves the skin feeling silky, soft and velvety smooth.
